10.1 – 10.3Scalars, vectors and types of vectorsMagnitude and direction

Scalars and vectors

A scalar has only magnitude (mass, time, length, speed, work). A vector has magnitude and direction (displacement, velocity, force, acceleration).

  • A vector is drawn as a directed line segment AB with initial point A and terminal point B. It is written a or AB.
  • The magnitude |a| = |AB| is the length of the segment and is never negative.

Types of vectors

TypeMeaning
Zero vector 0Magnitude 0, no definite direction. Initial and terminal points coincide.
Unit vector âMagnitude 1. â = a/|a| is the unit vector along a.
CoinitialVectors with the same initial point.
CollinearParallel to the same line, whatever their magnitudes or directions.
EqualSame magnitude and same direction.
Negative of a−a has the same magnitude as a and opposite direction.
Free vectorOnly magnitude and direction matter, not the position.

Two vectors are equal only if both magnitude and direction agree. Collinear vectors may differ in magnitude.

10.4 – 10.5Addition and multiplication by a scalarTriangle law, parallelogram law, ka

Adding vectors

Triangle law: if AB = a and BC = b, then AC = a + b.

Parallelogram law: if a and b are the adjacent sides OA and OB, the diagonal OC is a + b.

  • Commutative: a + b = b + a. Associative: (a + b) + c = a + (b + c).
  • a + 0 = a and a + (−a) = 0. Subtraction: a − b = a + (−b).
  • Triangle inequality: |a + b| ≤ |a| + |b|.
aba + bTriangle lawtail of b at head of aaba + bParallelogram lawsame tail, diagonal is the sum
Two ways to add vectors give the same result: a + b = b + a.

Multiplying by a scalar

For a scalar k, ka has magnitude |k||a| and is parallel to a. It points the same way if k > 0 and the opposite way if k < 0.

  • k(a + b) = ka + kb and (k + m)a = ka + ma.
  • Unit vector along a: â = (1/|a|) a.
  • Vector of magnitude λ in the direction of a: λâ = (λ/|a|) a.
  • a and b are collinear (parallel) if b = ka for some scalar k.
a2a½a−aka has length |k||a|Same direction as a if k > 0Opposite direction if k < 0Parallel to a for every kk = 0 gives the zero vector
Multiplying by a scalar stretches, shrinks or reverses a vector but keeps it on the same line.
10.5Components, position vectors, section formulaî, ĵ, k̂ and the point (x, y, z)

Components and magnitude

î, ĵ, k̂ are the unit vectors along the x, y and z axes. A vector a = a₁î + a₂ĵ + a₃k̂ has components a₁, a₂, a₃.

|a| = √(a₁² + a₂² + a₃²)
  • Add or subtract component by component: (a₁ ± b₁)î + (a₂ ± b₂)ĵ + (a₃ ± b₃)k̂.
  • ka = ka₁î + ka₂ĵ + ka₃k̂.
  • a = b exactly when the three pairs of components are equal.
  • a ∥ b exactly when a₁/b₁ = a₂/b₂ = a₃/b₃.
xyOP(x, y)rx îy ĵPosition vector of Pr = OP = x î + y ĵ|r| = √(x² + y²)In space: r = x î + y ĵ + z k̂|r| = √(x² + y² + z²)
The position vector is the sum of its components along the axes, and its length comes from Pythagoras.

Vector joining two points

For P(x₁, y₁, z₁) and Q(x₂, y₂, z₂):

PQ = OQ − OP = (x₂ − x₁)î + (y₂ − y₁)ĵ + (z₂ − z₁)k̂
  • Terminal minus initial.
  • Three points A, B, C are collinear if AB is a scalar multiple of AC.

Direction cosines

If a vector makes angles α, β, γ with the axes, then l = cos α, m = cos β, n = cos γ are its direction cosines. For a = a₁î + a₂ĵ + a₃k̂:

l = a₁/|a|, m = a₂/|a|, n = a₃/|a|, l² + m² + n² = 1
  • The unit vector along a is lî + mĵ + nk̂.
  • Numbers proportional to l, m, n are called direction ratios.

Section formula

For A and B with position vectors a and b, the point R dividing AB in the ratio m : n has position vector:

Internally: R = (m b + n a)/(m + n)Externally: R = (m b − n a)/(m − n)
  • Mid point: (a + b)/2 (m = n = 1, internal).
ABPABQm = 2n = 1AB = mBQ = mInternal (AP : PB = m : n)OP = (m·OB + n·OA)/(m + n)External (AQ : BQ = m : n)OQ = (m·OB − n·OA)/(m − n)
Internal division lies between the points; external division lies outside the segment.
10.6.1 – 10.6.2Scalar (dot) product and projectiona · b = |a||b| cos θ

Definition and component form

The scalar product of nonzero vectors a and b with angle θ (0° ≤ θ ≤ 180°) is a · b = |a||b| cos θ. The result is a scalar.

a · b = a₁b₁ + a₂b₂ + a₃b₃cos θ = (a · b)/(|a||b|)
θabprojection of a on ba · b = |a||b| cos θ= a₁b₁ + a₂b₂ + a₃b₃Projection of a on b:(a · b)/|b| = |a| cos θa · b = 0 ⇔ a ⟂ b (nonzero)
The scalar product measures how much of a lies along b.

Properties

  • Commutative: a · b = b · a. Distributive: a · (b + c) = a · b + a · c.
  • a · a = |a|². î · î = ĵ · ĵ = k̂ · k̂ = 1 and î · ĵ = ĵ · k̂ = k̂ · î = 0.
  • a · b = 0 for nonzero a, b exactly when a ⟂ b.
  • (ka) · b = k(a · b). |a · b| ≤ |a||b|.
  • |a ± b|² = |a|² ± 2a · b + |b|².

Projection

The projection of a on b is (a · b)/|b| = |a| cos θ (a scalar). The projection vector is ((a · b)/|b|²) b.

  • Projection of a on b and of b on a differ in general.
  • It is negative when θ is obtuse.
10.6.3Vector (cross) producta × b = |a||b| sin θ n̂

Definition and component form

For a and b with angle θ, a × b = |a||b| sin θ n̂, where n̂ is the unit vector perpendicular to both such that a, b, n̂ form a right-handed system. The result is a vector.

a × b = (a₂b₃ − a₃b₂)î − (a₁b₃ − a₃b₁)ĵ + (a₁b₂ − a₂b₁)k̂
  • Remember it as the determinant with rows î ĵ k̂, a₁ a₂ a₃, b₁ b₂ b₃.
aba × bθ|a × b| = |a||b| sin θ= area of the parallelograma × b ⟂ a and a × b ⟂ ba, b, a × b: right-handedb × a = −(a × b)Triangle area = ½|a × b|
The cross product points out of the plane and its length is the area spanned.

Properties

  • Not commutative: b × a = −(a × b). Distributive: a × (b + c) = a × b + a × c.
  • a × b = 0 for nonzero a, b exactly when a ∥ b. In particular a × a = 0.
  • î × ĵ = k̂, ĵ × k̂ = î, k̂ × î = ĵ (and the reverses are negative).
  • (ka) × b = k(a × b). |a × b|² = |a|²|b|² − (a · b)².

Areas

  • Triangle with sides AB and AC: area = ½|AB × AC|.
  • Parallelogram with adjacent sides a and b: area = |a × b|.
  • Parallelogram with diagonals d₁ and d₂: area = ½|d₁ × d₂|.
  • A unit vector perpendicular to a and b: ±(a × b)/|a × b|.
